BHMA A156.18 Materials and Finishes Certification

certified finishesThe Builders Hardware Manufacturers Association (BHMA) is the Trade Association which represents North American manufacturers of Builders Hardware. BHMA develops and maintains ANSI-approved standards for a variety of functional and physical product attributes. One of those standards – ANSI/BHMA A156.18 – verifies and certifies the material characteristics and durability of finishes.

Below are descriptions of some of the tests conducted to verify that a finish meets the
ANSI/BHMA A156.18 performance standard
Corrosion Wear & Chemical Ultraviolet
Tests resistance to corrosion, staining and blistering from exposure to salt spray
Tests resistance to scratching, gouging, marring (pencil hardness), abrasion and perspiration from handling during operation
Tests resistance to degradation (chipping, cracking, color loss or change) from light exposure
